This project will see the upgrading and resurfacing of playing facilities and alterations to ancillary facilities which are essential to Perth Tennis Club’s ambition to both retain and grow membership and improve the performance of players. People with disabilities will also be encouraged to participate and enjoy playing tennis. This project will involve the construction of four new all-weather polymeric tennis courts.
Perth Tennis Club is the oldest Tennis Club in Scotland, Victorian ladies and gentlemen were enjoying a game of tennis in the Fair City long before Wimbledon emerged in a London suburb, and the Perth club even pre-dates the creation of the Lawn Tennis Association.
In the 1970's the Bells Whiskey company funded a new clubhouse and courts for the club and remained an interested party until 15 years ago when the partnership ended. The tennis club is now the sole owner of the facility.
The clubhouse itself has gone through some recent upgrades including new changing facilities and a new boiler. There is a snooker room and table tennis facility as well as squash courts indoors. When Perth Tennis Club approached SITA Trust for a grant the old tennis surfaces had gone well past the point where patch ups could be undertaken, having been last resurfaced 14 years ago!
Derek Brown, President of Perth Tennis Club, has “welcomed the funding from SITA Trust as a tremendous vote of confidence in the Club and the plans for its future development. The new courts will enable us to deliver our program of increasing sporting activities within our local communities and give more opportunity to anyone, irrespective of age or ability, to exercise, learn some new skills, and, most importantly, have fun.”
Jools Granville of SITA Trust added “Perth Tennis Club is not just a club with a fantastic history it also has a fabulous future ahead of it. It is a hugely popular club and players range from age 3 to 92! The club offers a mix of social tennis, league matches and practice and children’s coaching. We are delighted to have been able to support this project through the Landfill Communities Fund.”
SITA Trust provides grants through the Landfill Communities Fund. This important source of funding has been available since 1997 and has provided such worthy projects with more than £1.3 billion.
